Welcome to the Pioneer Village

Pioneerland is located at the LaPorte County Fairgrounds, LaPorte, Indiana.  It's inception began in 1995 as part of the LaPorte County Fair 150th Anniversary.  Since it's beginning, Pioneerland has grown to include:

  • log cabin
  • blacksmith shop
  • antique post & beam barn
  • one room school house
  • post office
  • general store
  • farm bureau cabin
  • pioneer heritage garden
  • outdoor cooking kitchen
  • quilter's cabin
  • artisan barn
  • wash house

The entire village was funded and is operated by volunteers.  The village depicts the 1800-1840's time period.  It is in full operation during the LaPorte Country Fair (the 3rd week of July), and for school tours the first two weeks of May and the last two weeks of September.  It is also open the first weekend in December and for special events as requested.  The events include bus tours, the Indiana High School Rodeo, church groups, weddings, etc.  NOTE: All buildings are handicap accessible. 

 

2009 Christmas Walk

The weather was great and our turn out for this years Christmas Walk was a huge success.  We had over 3000 people join us for the two days which was one of our largest attended Christmas Walks.  Everyone enjoyed the chance to take a sleigh/wagon ride; drink hot cider and eat home made cookies in the Log Cabin; say hello to Santa in the barn or stop in the one room school house and warm up by the stove.  Or, you could send a letter to Santa in the Post Office or maybe stop by the Blacksmithing building and see them making Christmas Bells and other decorative items out of metal.  Overall, the community had the chance to visit Pioneer Land and go back in time and see how the Pioneer's lived.  Below are many pictures from the Walk, enjoy.

 
2009 County Fair

This year's fair for Pioneer Land was the best ever per Dick Reel.  "As I've said before, we can have 1800's buildings, but the volunteers make it come alive with their commitment and talents.  For a few memories:

1. A beatiful garden that is very authentic.

2. 25 new volunteers that included children with many talents.

3. 10 artisans in the new barn, plus a fence maker and wood turner who were a complete suprise.

4. The best food on the fairgrounds.

5. Volunteers who helped each other when needed.

6. the oxen, who many enjoy each year.

7. Visitors from other states and nations.

8. Quilts that are as beautiful as the people making them.

9. Cold milk.

10. Blacksmiths who entertain their audience.

11. The new addition to the kitchen, new information booth, and the artisan barn, plus a storage building with outhouse for the quilt cabin.

12. General store and candy shop, always a place to get great souvenirs and food.

13. A do-it-yourself washhouse with never ending laundry.

14. A pre-fair Artisan Barn fund drive that raised $21,000 plus another $1,400 donated during the fair.

15. The auction of quilts and hand made donated items totaling $16,645.00

There is nothing like Pioneer Land at any County Fair in Indiana.  We are very fortunate to have the community backing to support our efforts.  Without you none of this would be possible!  Your terrific!"
